Plans for a private marina on Lough Derg appear to be dead in the water.

An Bord Pleanala has upheld a decision by North Tipperary County Council to refuse
permission for the retention and completion of works to convert a berthing area into a
     marina at Shannonvale, Dromineer.

Local man Michael Kelly had appealed the local authoritys decision to An Bord Pleanala.

An Taisce's North Tipperary branch had expressed opposition to the development.

More Garda patrols are needed on the riverside walk in Thurles.

That's according to local Councillor Lucy McLaughlin, who says such an initiative could help solve some of the problems that are occurring there.

She says that drinking by young people is the biggest difficulty blighting the area at the moment.

Her call for this to be clamped down on was widely supported by other Councillors at this week's Town Council meeting.

South Tipp Councillors back IFA call

0

South Tipperary County Councillors have joined their North Tipp colleagues in giving a
     resounding backing to the IFA.

South Tipp IFA Chairman TJ Maher addressed yesterday's meeting of the council, asking
for support for an IFA motion. The motion is calling on the Ministers for Agriculture and Foreign Affairs
and the Taoiseach to assert Ireland's vital national interest at the highest level in Europe by rejecting
     Peter Mandelson's concessions.

The IFA estimates that cuts by the EU Trade Commissioner will result in a drop of €196 million in the
value of farm output, with a potential loss of 2, 750 Tipperary farm livelihoods and is approaching all
     county councils for support.

TJ Maher was met with widespread support, although a number of councillors hoped the issue could be resolved without farmers opting to push for a NO vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty.

Councillor Derry Foley formerly proposed the backing of the IFA motion as currently worded.
Last month North Tipperary County Councillors voted to back the same motion.

The IFA is accusing South Tipperary County Council and the National Roads Authority of penny pinching.

According to the organisation’s South Tipp Environment Committee Chairman John O’Flynn both bodies have failed to complete compensation negotiations with over forty landowners on the route of the new Cashel to Mitchelstown road.

Mr. O’Flynn, who’s from Fethard, claims the situation facing farmers is particularly unjust as the value of the compensation proposed for the compulsory purchase of more than 1,100 acres is tied to January 2006 land values.

He’s also calling for the NRA, South Tipperary County Council and landowner representatives to enter into negotiations in order to ensure that every landowner is paid in advance of the opening of the new road to public traffic.

One of Nenagh’s most significant community facilities is getting a major injection of state funding.

The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Eamon O’Cuiv has announced that the town’s Arts Centre will receive almost €374,000 to help pay for its activities.

According to Minister O’Cuiv the money will provide opportunities for people from disadvantaged areas to take up employment in the service of their local community.

The funding from the Community Services Programme is available because of the Government’s commitment under the current Social Partnership Agreement to increase support for the community and voluntary sector.

Community groups have named hospitals on the Government's hit list ahead of a major rally in Monaghan next weekend - three of them are in Tipperary.

Monaghan Community Alliance Chairperson Peadar McMahon says if Monaghan loses its hospital, other hospital closures will follow 'as night follows day'.

The North-East is the pilot for the Government's National Hospital Plan - the Alliance claim this would ultimately see the elimination of over 40 acute inpatient facilities including Nenagh General, South Tipp General and Our Lady's in Cashel

Peader McMahon describes the Monaghan situation as a dummy run for public hospital closures in the rest of the country.
