The introduction of a third bin collection by early next year should not result in any extra expense for householders.

That was the clear message from two Fianna Fail members of Carrick on Suir Town Council last night.

The "brown bin" will be for biodegradable waste such as food and garden waste - the system has to be introduced in line with an EU directive.

However Councillors Sylvia Cooney Sheehan and Patsy Murphy said they would be opposing any extra charges as a result - despite the fact that Councillors have no say in

this system as a result of legislation introduced by Minister Martin Cullen in 2001.

While in favour of diverting waste from landfill, Councillor Cooney-Sheehan says the new system doesn't appear to have been well thought out.
