Justice warns of tsunami of homicide over drinking culture

A Judge is warning of a 'tsunami of homicide and rape cases' because of Ireland's drink culture.

Mr. Justice Paul Carney mad the remarks as he sentenced a father of two who admitted raping an acquaintance.

The High Court Judge was dealing with the case of a Waterford man who's pleaded guilty to raping a woman he's met at a night club in February 2011.

The man – a married father of 2 – had drunk 6 or 7 pints – when he offered the woman a lift home. Instead he took her to a wooded area outside a Waterford town where he raped her.

During the man's sentencing today Mr. Justice Paul Carney described the case as the latest in a long line in which young men – with no previous convictions – take a quantity of drink they're not used to and wake up the following morning facing responsibility for a homicide or rape.

Mr. Justice Carney says he's fearful of a 'tsunami' of prosecutions if internet drinking contests continue.
